Coming this Week: It's a Chicken-and-Egg-and-Chipmunk Thing

Get a taste of Pandora before the movie comes out with James Cameron's Avatar: The Game.
Faced with two video games based on movies, both shipping out this week before the movies release, we asked the old, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" question. At first it seemed obvious because we always have eggs for breakfast, but then someone raised the question, "But what if you sleep until lunch?" It certainly boggles the mind.

This week, James Cameron's Avatar: The Game ships on December 1, giving you about two-and-half weeks to immerse yourself in the savage world of Pandora, where an alien invasion is taking place, and humans just happen to be the aliens. Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel also ships December 1, giving you about three weeks to immerse yourself in the savage world of the music industry, where a chipmunk invasion continues, and humans just happen to be okay with talking, singing rodents.

Getting the game before the movie comes out gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with the plot and characters, as well as a chance to enjoy playing a game with all of the elements that make a good movie good. But do you risk seeing some movie "spoilers" if you play the game before the movie comes out? When you watch Avatar, will you wonder, "Hey, where's the part where I blow up the hammerhead-dinosaur-looking thing? Or will you find out that Theodore is really a marmot? We think you're fairly safe to get the game first, and then see the movie. See these and other titles shipping this week below.

Ditch the controllers, and perhaps a few pounds, with the camera-controlled Your Shape for Wii.
We have a virtual cornucopia of things for which we're grateful this Thanksgiving. For example, we're grateful for opposable thumbs and forward-facing binocular vision. We can't imagine what video games would look like without them. However, we're mostly thankful for you, our valued customer. Please take a moment to give yourself a pat on the back for helping us to put food on our tables doing what we love. We like you just the way you are, but if you'd prefer a shaplier version of yourself for the holidays, allow us to mention that Your Shape, featuring Jenny McCarthy, is shipping out this week. The included camera separates this one from the other workout games. Instead of trying to juggle two remotes and a resistance band, you can just concentrate on doing the exercises while the camera monitors your movements, and your digitalized Jenny McCarthy workout buddy offers feedback. We're not saying you need Your Shape. We're just saying it's coming out this week, and we have to write about games that are coming out this week, right? If you're perfectly happy with your shape, and allow us to reiterate the fact that we like you just the way you are, then check out these other games that are shipping this week, too.

Those 2D platforms from the good ol' days of 8-bit gaming are now 3D in 3D Dot Game Heroes.
Like a Star Trek storyline where Captain Picard runs into Captain Kirk, 3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3 will blend next-generation technology with old-school ingenuity for a timeless adventure.

The story may sound familiar: a kingdom threatened by an evil demon… a legendary sword nestled in a sacred forest… a hero sent out on a quest through puzzle-filled dungeons… dozens of useful items to collect, weapons to equip, and oversized bosses to best…. But that's because it's supposed to sound familiar, evoking memories of the days when blocky characters set out on their quests, accompanied by monophonic musical scores that would stick in your head for days at a time.

Atlus U.S.A., Inc., publishers of the Shin Megami Tensei and Trauma Center series, not to mention the sleeper hit of 2009, Demon’s Souls, tell us that they wanted 3D Dot Game Heroes to be the ultimate love letter to the 8-bit era and the perfect blend of retro chic and modern sleek, using full power of the PS3 to bring old-school pixel-sprite visuals into the 21st century. We just think it's fun. Older gamers should find comfort and nostalgia in the familiar music and sounds, while an entirely new generation of gamers may come to love the magic of the classic action-adventure epic — and maybe they’ll figure out why their parents and older siblings are always raving about those all-time gaming classics.

However, it's not intended to be merely a carbon copy of those old classics. Plenty of little touches, hidden features and creative additions should make it a classic in its own right. You can use the included character creator to design, animate, and play as the hero of your dreams, assuming you dream in 8-bit. You'll also be able to take one of the many different weapons you’ll collect over the course of your adventures and pay the blacksmith to make them stronger or imbued with special powers. Don your explorer’s cap, because the game will be rich in hidden areas and bonus content in the Kingdom of Dotnia, where you should leave no stone unbombed to discover what they hold.

3D Dot Game Heroes is slated to arrive May 11, 2010 in North America. Stay tuned to our 3D Dot Game Heroes product page for more details about this next-gen blast from your gaming past.
