Christian Whitehead is a genius.
To start out my review, I need to go back in time, back to the 90's. AKA: The Glory Days. When I first had this game, it was on the PC for our old computer around '95-'97. I was thrilled to play this game and every moment was special. However, the game was lost, as well as many memories with it. Then came the year of 2005. In 2005 Sonic Gems Collection was released. When I got the game opening month, I was thrilled to play it. Though Sonic CD’s physics were not like the Genesis days, it was still Sonic for me. While I’ve never played the original, I’m very familiar with the Original Trilogy and its more modern titles. After playing Sonic Generations, I was convinced that Sonic was back into action. I was even going to consider that Generations was possibly Sonic’s best game yet (maybe not over S3&K). However, 2011 delivered one more gem before the end of the year….
On the 14th of December, my childhood was brought back in a whole new dimension. This game is what I remembered… and more! Because that is exactly what it is! The game has been completely rebuilt from scratch. It looks like Christian Whitehead knew what he was doing, because this game is easily the best way to spend $5 (even over Subway!). Sonic CD features BOTH soundtracks, different graphic variations, widescreen display, leaderboards, a bonus character, and even Sonic 2’s Spin Dash (I still use the Super Peel-Out over the Spin Dash anyways) and other extra’s to keep the entertainment going. Even though I had 11/12 achievements in the first two days, this game looks great, responds well to the ever picky platformer-timing, and it’s a blast to play. I only wish that Mr. Whitehead would consider doing the other classic Sonic games (1, 2, 3, and Knuckles).
Overall, though I suffer from my nostalgia glasses fogging my view sometimes, here’s my overall score:
Gameplay: 9/10 - this game plays great, looks fresh (thank you smooth graphic’s option), and is memorable in every way. Period.
Music: 9/10 - While I did grow up with the U.S. soundtrack, both fit the game well and they’re tough to beat. It’s probably my favorite soundtrack (as a whole) in the entire series (though S3&K keeps it close).
Graphics: 8.5/10 – Now it tough to grade this part of the game… Because it lacks the 3D style of modern games (I personally don’t care because I’m all about 2D style graphics anyways). However, I’m still a fan of the Smooth Graphics option. If it WAS possible to create a more “Sonic Generations” look as a final option for the graphics that would have been huge! But… that probably would’ve bumped up the price tag too.
Replayability: 6/10 - Though I would personally rank it with an 8.5, I had to give it a 6 because I'm ranking it to what other will say. Why would people only give it a 6 for this category? If you’re not a Time-Attack fan, I believe that many will struggle with this game. I for one am a huge time-attack style person (I don’t even want to know how many hours I’ve thrown away with Mario Kart Time Trials). But without a person enjoying Time-Attack, this game will fall short for many people. It’s a great game. But it isn’t going to last very long for many. If you don’t have interest in Time-Attack it’ still a great platformer. The "Savior of the Planet" achievement should keep you busy if it’s your first playthrough for a while (or your second, or however many playthroughs). Sadly, the game is just short and there’s not a lot to it. But that’s the joy in this game: it needs to be explored in order for it to be enjoyed.
Final Score: 32.5/40
Closing: It’s easily the best way to spend $5. Period. It’s a great way to rediscover your childhood in a whole new way. If you’re new to the series, I’d say that you’ve picked the best time to get into the Sonic series. Because I’d say that this is his best game to date.
