Phantasy Star Universe
The Most Honest Review
The graphics are bland and uninteresting. Voice acting isn't terrible, but it's nothing impressive. Likewise, none of the characters are unique enough to make them stand out. Combat is generic "hack n' slash" with little innovation, strafing is too slow to avoid anything, and there's no "block" or "dodge" button. The story itself is not bad, but the problem is that the way it's executed, it feels like this game should be an anime. Music is nothing to boast about. If you're looking for a great JRPG, don't get Phantasy Star Universe. It's sad that this wasn't a better game because it definitely had potential.
Minor Problems with PSU but still good of a game
PSU is a offline and Online game. The game has minor problems from graphics to menu. The menu is so out of place yeah it's nice to you can use your weapons and item by hitting O. But for some reason you can't heal your allies only you. Of course you can heal all if you have an item to do that. The graphics are good but some minor shaking of the ground when you zoom or you but on your googles. Anyways the in the cities the people kind of vanished out of thin air. The sound is fair the music is good, voice acting is a little off but you get use to it. The story is okay not as great of a space opera then Xenosaga or Star Ocean. In all the game is packed with gameplay over 50 hours or so. Extra mode is a nice way to make your own character but beat the game first though you gain more stuff for the extra mode. The AI of your lazy allies are the dumbest fools, they just stand there while you get smack around, too bad you can't dodge their nasty attacks.
A SonicTeam game that isn't about Sonic?
That was my reaction when I saw that SonicTeam had partially helped in this game's development. Being that the last game I've played by SonicTeam was 'Sonic Heroes', a half-decent game in its own right, I decided to give this a try. The game, for lack of better terms, was fun the first time. But then, after the game was beaten and the great evil at the time slain, I was thinking 'What now?' Generally when you beat a game of the RPG genre, the only thing left is free roaming & completing old quests. And then there's the free play. Free play is where 80% of the fun is. The character customization by itself gave me hours of fun; the kind of fun one might have playing with Barbie dolls or something, but fun nonetheless. As for PSN/Live, I've never had either, so I wouldn't be the one to tell you. Overall; a decent game by a decent game developer. Run of the mill SonicTeam stuff. Still a good game, though.
This is an amazing game i give it a 10 out of 10.
This game is amazing with the offline and online play such as beast mode i refer u to get this game if u like having fun its not all about battling its also about hanging with friends and trying to form a unstoppable party. It has its ups and not that many downs if u are looking for a game kinda like star wars and dynasty warriors combined i would definatly get this game i have played the whole series and would have to say overall this game is the most amazing game of the series it can also be good for small kids but if u dont believe me look at the videos all over the web they did not go wrong making this game
An excellent action RPG!
While searching for a lengthy game to play over the summer, I stumbled upon Phantasy Star Universe (PSU). Within days I purchased it, hardly even researching it, buying this game was probably one of my most rash game purchases. But I don't regret it in the slightest. I don't have any history with the PS series, so I can't compare them to this one. RPGs are know for their customization and PSU doesn't lack that. At first though all you can change is your weapon(s) (you can wield 2 at once, by the way) but after a few chapters pass, you can change your license which changes your fighting style. And by the time you reach chapter 4, you can unlock "Extra Mode" that enables you to create your own character and go out on missions. Customization aside, the gameplay is sorta hack-in-slash/strategic, depending on what weapons you have equipped at the boss you are facing. Weapons have special "triangle button" moves (I don't know what the real name is) However using these moves takes up "photon energy" so after so many uses, you have to wait for it to recharge. Pressing the R1 button allows you to use your left handed weapon. So while one weapon is charging, you can fight with the other. Nifty, huh? You are given partners which change throughout the game but they have never been much use to me and they generally complain while I do all the work. "You left an opening!" One character exclaims while I'm rapidly firing at the enemy and he stands on the sidelines. ^_^; There was an online feature, but the servers have been taken down. So I never had a chance to use it. But the offline game by itself is good enough for me. Overall the game is a great addition to your PS2 collection. I'm even planning on even buying the sequel now!
OK, first off if you are not a person for RPG's then turn around and put this game down. This game is an expierience that only a true RPG fan can enjoy. My cousin showed me phantasy star online and i was instantly hooked. I saw this one at the store and just had to buy it. The story mode is amazing and will take you between 50 and 60 hours to complete (or was it 24-30) Anyway this game is good. The free play is a little bland and I never got a chance to try online before the ser ver closed but i hear that it was sweet. This game isn't as good as its sequel: Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminouse but the story mode was WAY better then the second one. The game will keep you hooked through the story mode and just because of that I definately recomend it to you.
A great game!
A great game every ps2 owner should have. The only problem is the customization in the main story. All you can do is change clothes. But when you unlock extra mode the character customization increases to 9. The game took me like 50 - 60 hours to complete and was pretty hard. The games characters are great and kind of funny at some parts. The game is actually humerous on most cutscenes. If you buy this game for the low price at gamestop it is a steal for about 50 hours of entertainment. This was a game that was hard to put down. Then the 50 hours of gameplay goes up another 25 - 50 hours because of extra mode. Extra mode is fun but less entertaining than the story mode. After story mode and extra mode there is more on the game. If you have internet connection on your ps2 and are willing to pay 9.99 a month for a membership you can play network mode. this is why the game is massively multiplayer. I really recommend this game to anyone who likes the fable games or any other great rpg.
