FAQ's
What will the World of Warcraft TCG provide to fans of the online game?

World of Warcraft players are highly invested in the game. A lot of the time, when they're not playing Warcraft, they're talking about Warcraft. We wanted to give them a portable way to expand that experience, and play it socially with other people, face-to-face. In addition to that, there's going to be a lot in the game that non-WoW players who are familiar with TCGs will be interested in. All of the classic elements you'd expect from fantasy lore are going to be in this game.

Are the game designers familiar with WoW? Will they be able to do justice to the universe?

We have some die hard World of Warcraft fans here at Upper Deck Entertainment. Water cooler talk often revolves around our adventures in the game last night, and many of us have Level 60 characters. We are absolutely passionate about this game. World of Warcraft is the #1 fantasy franchise, and we felt it was a perfect fit for a TCG.

There has been a lot of speculation regarding the innovative things this TCG will bring to the table, such as LootTM cards.

As a part of tying the TCG experience into the online experience, we are going to have LootTM cards, which are a way to get cosmetic upgrades to your online Warcraft character. There will be extremely rare cards that will give you a code. You'll go online and enter that code, and it will modify your online character in some way. It'll be something noticeable - when you're walking around in the game, people will see this unique item on you. We're working closely with Blizzard to make sure that these items will be highly desirable. But, these will not do anything to unbalance the game. These will be prestige items that are special, but they are cosmetic.

How will the TCG recreate the Raid experience?

Raid Decks will be a completely new way to play TCGs. Traditionally, TCGs are a two player, head-to-head experience. That's a very important aspect ofplay, and that will definitely be supported in this game. In addition to that one-on-one battle, we're also going to have Raid Decks. These will allow one player to take on the role of a giant, epic monster. For example, Onyxia, the great fire-breathing dragon, who was the head of the first raid in WoW when it launched. One player will take on the role of a monster like Onyxia, and gain all the powerful abilities that come with it, and the other players will build their regular decks, and team up to try and take down this mighty dragon. You'll need multiple people to take down a creature as fierce as Onyxia.

The experience of multiple people working cooperatively towards one goal harkens back to the RPG experience, where you have a dungeon master and a bunch of party members. But, for Warcraft, it is the way you play online. Not only do you battle each other, but you work together to take down mighty foes. That's a very important part of the WoW experience that we wanted to recreatein the TCG.

What kind of art can we expect from this game?

There is an amazing series of artists working on this set, many of the top names in the fantasy field, as well as people outside fantasy. Some of the big name people include Darrell Sweet, who did all the Wheel of Time covers. Greg Hildebrandt will do some pieces. Dave Dorman, R.K. Post, even Todd McFarlane is doing work for this set! We also have Blizzard artists pitching in, and taking the opportunity to design some of the pieces for us, which look absolutely amazing. Samwise, Ariel Olivetti, Alex Garner, Greg Staples, and the list goes on.

What can we expect from Organized Play? UDE has a great track record for running lots of programs and huge tournaments for Yu-Gi-Oh! and Vs. System.

We plan to have a very extensive tournament system. There will be different Organized Play programs, so there will be a lot of ways for people to get involved and have fun. There will be higher level tournaments, and we're expecting to have some really interesting and exciting prizes!
