the rod and reel sucks because you cant drive the boat so i tried it with just the nunchuk and the wii remote and it works a whole lot better

Rod and Reel dont work how it looks!!!
The reel does not reel like it is showed and supposed too. I too could never figure how to use it efficiently the way it was designed. It is a huge waste of money. The game is good for fishing but the rod and reel is nothing more than a casing so either buy rapalas one or just buy the game itself because its not worth the box it comes in!

Worst ever
I found this game to be the worst fishing game by far. I tried playing it with and without the fishing rod. Its very hard to cast and gives you little options for tackle, line and rods on quick play. The rod was very heavy to hold and sitting down to play is not an option. The instructions were of no help what so ever. I played for 3 hours trying to figure this game out and had no luck. I thought that bass pro would have put out a video game that would have exceeded all expectations. Instead I found myself very disappointed in this game. I will not recommend this game for anyone. Try Rapala Tournament Fishing it is better by far. Much easier to control. I hope I have been of some help to some of you all. Please save your money and buy another game.

Found a workaround to the problems with this game
I just bought this package and I thought it was defected. It was nearly impossible to steer the boat and the casting was either over sensitive or under sensitive. I returned it and got a new one, same issues. After getting very frustrated I started playing with the different options and FINALLY discovered switching the controllers to B mode instead of A mode made a MASSIVE difference. The boat is much more natural and steers with ease and the reeling action is actually way more lifelike as you need to use the actual reel to crank instead of just pressing a button. B mode should absolutely be the default for this game. The casting is still a little tweaky but realized if you try not to flip your wrist back too much the sensor isn't lost. It's not a natural feeling cast but it does the job. Great/fun game and I'm glad I found a workaround that suits it. The reel is a really cool idea.

This game is great for avid fishermen
I like this game for many reasons. For one it has species of fish native to my area and also lakes in my area.It is challenging but a lot of fun. The hardest part of the game is casting and once you get that down then its just like real fishing. You have to find the fish, and use apropriate lures. The fight is realistic and its awesome when some species of fish jump, and when they are really big when they jump it slow motions (awesome). I also love this game becouse it has lake trout and northern pike. Those to species are my favorite so its cool to be able to catch them while at home when i cant get out on the lake. The grafics are not the greatest, but its a wii game not a ps3 game. Its definetly acceptable. The only thing that could of possibly made it better was if there was like 20 or more species of fish. Its acceptable though its the first true simulator of fishing that isnt cheesy. If you get this game give the casting time. It took me twenty five minutes of screwing up to get it down. Tight lines

Watch Out! Can't Get Hooked On This One.
I couldn't wait for a good fishing game. Not a child's type game with kiddie graphics. This Bass Pro Shop was just what I wanted and the intuitive rod and reel made me excited, so much that I actually bought in online. Usually I go to the Game Stop in town, so this was a big deal for me. The box arrived the day after the game's release - VERY fast. Putting the rod and reel together is a snap. Just be careful with the rod cover. If you pull it straight up the prongs could snap. I think it's easy to open and the possibility of a snap is slim. When together it looks like a short fishing rod and reel, except it's upside down. It's a bait cast but the controls work as if it were a spinner reel. Not that it really matters. The controls are not easy to use upside down or right-side up. The game only came with instructions on how to put the rod and reel together. Nothing anywhere about how to use the controls. The game gives directions for the remote and numchuck but they are not easily transferred to the rod and reel. Seeing how this is a big draw for the game, it would be nice to know how to get it to work correctly. Getting the numchuck into the correct position seemed easy enough - but it wasn't. It can look like it's in perfectly and the cover will snap on without a problem, but then you'll discover the numchuck won't work and you have to start the process over again. I like the way the cord is wrapped up and out of the way. If only I could get the thing to work well. With the rod and reel you must control the boat with the reel, trying to turn the reel forward and back until it finally goes the way you want it to - except to the right. With and without the rod and reel attached, the boat would only turn to the left. Not right and not even straight ahead. It goes pretty fast making those left turn circles. I had more success driving the boat in reverse to get to where I wanted to go. The fish finder only showed a couple of fish which were never there when I finally got a cast out to the spot. I caught a fish in the tutorial but that was all. I played with this thing for 4 1/2 hours (thank you Wii timer), and never caught another fish. Never saw another fish. Not very fun. Casting is difficult and inconsistent. The directions tell you to cast between the green lines on the cast diagram, yet that never worked. I needed to let it move from the bottom green line to the top green line and as it moved back down cast out. It worked great - about three times. Several other times it cast correctly but I don't know how. I've fished a lot in real lakes with real rods and reels so I know how to cast. This is suppose to be the same motions. They're not. And bringing the line back up with the rod and reel is odd. Sometimes turning forward worked, other times I had to turn it backwards. Using the B button and forgetting the experience of reeling in a fish works so much better - yet makes the rod and reel unnecessary. I will say that when I did catch that fish in the tutorial the fight could really be felt through the rod. I looked to see if it was bending it felt so real. It didn't, but it felt like it. The fish put up a really good fight. It took about 10 minutes to get it to the boat. It jumped out of the water twice during the fight, which was cool to see - and feel. If they only got the controls right or gave us directions on how to use the controls this rod and reel would be everything the hyped up sales page said it would be. If you want a good, fun fishing game this is not for you. If you like a huge challenge and have a lot of gaming experience, go for it. It is definitely not for kids or the casual gamer. The controls are awkward and don't always work as they should. The rod and reel are difficult to work with and come without directions. The game manual never even mentions the rod and reel. Using the controls sans the rod and reel are no more fun than with. The boat will still only move to the left, though rather fast if you like go

Lots of fun
If you have been looking for a good fishing game, this is it. The graphics for the Wii version aren't the best, but the gameplay and experience is just like going out on the lake. The reel is kind of flimsy, but the design is cool and feels like a real fishing rod. There are plenty of fish to go after, and you have tons of options on lures, line, etc. at the Bass Pro Shop. I haven't played too many fishing games, but this seems to re-create the fishing experience really well. You could literally get up at 6:00 AM and fish until the sun goes down. You have to unlock the lakes with the fishing tournaments, but it's really cool to drive your boat around and actually find the fish, whether they are under bridges, in coves, or in areas of dead trees, etc. As I said before, the fishing experience is a lot of fun, and I actually spent 15 minutes or so trying to reel in a 35Ib catfish. Fun game, and I recommend it.
