Let Down
I bought this game from the 9.99 bin, and I should have left it there. I've been at it almost a week and have yet to get into it. When I think of RPG's, I think of the Final Fantasy series, Fable, and Oblivion. This fell VERY short of my RPG expectaions. The controls are awkward, I'm not agreeing with the combat system, and the menus take a lot of getting used to. Leveling up isn't about EXP, its about money and "skill points". No armor yet and its frustratng because even wth a decent weapon, you're stll gonna get owned 70% of the time. That goes back to the faulty battle system also. I've read a lot of great reviews about Risen, and maybe I'm not far enough into the game for it to be any good, but for now I'm contemplating putting it in my "trade in" pile. I'm sure the game was made with great intentions. Sorry, but I'm just not captivated...:(

Disappointing...
This game... it's worse than Two Worlds 1 in my book. They took a new approach to 'Hack & Slash' called 'Dodge & Block', and until you master this you are gonna get roughed up. But with the horrid controls... maybe that's the problem altogether. I played this game a few times, why I do not know... I certainly do not like it.
Get Arcania instead, it's basically the game I was expecting Risen to be when I wasted my money on it (Risen being the waste, not Arcania).

Bad
Played for a bit and it was just bad. The controls are bad just everything is bad. If you would tap the right stick you turn completley around.

Dry gameplay, empty story, and a waste of my time.
This game started off very slow, with close to no tutorial of the games awkward menu system. Right off the bat you are thrown into an enclosed village, where no one is allowed to leave. While inside, you spend hours trying to figure out how to get out, wishing you could explore that almost tolerable looking world. But unfortunately this game falls flat almost immediately. Very quickly you lose the will to continue your "adventure" and find yourself scurrying back to the video store. A poor attempt at a character/stat builder is made, but is easily forgotten because of its frustrating qualities and poor execution. Leave this for the RPG hipsters, and never come back.

decent game
this game was a little slow in the start. you wash up on shore after your boat crashes. you venture in the island and you kill some monsters. then you have 3 ways to go, you can go to a town called harbor town which is controlled by the inquisition(become a mage),you can go to a swamp and fight for Don Estaban(warrior/rogue), or get captured and thrown into the monastery(staff fighter). as you venture farther and farther through the game, you start seeing lizardmen.(somewhat of the problem at the island, this game will make you hate the word lizard.) You soon find out, that these lizards are coming from behind a giant wall that you open after finding these crystal disks,a cave is inside. at the end of the game you fight a lame battle against a titan deep inside of that cave.

Great for Rpg Fans
I love it. Gameplay is great. Combat is ok. Dialog is a little on the lengthy side but not too bad. Multiple options on direction give it a good replay value. Worth playing for any RPG fan.

Enjoyable, but frustrating
I picked up Risen because it was a free game on a buy two get one free deal, so I figured I would try it. I was pleasantly shocked because it was very fun. There is a few different paths you can take in this game with the main story, which is always a plus. Your actions have an immediate and obvious effect of the way others live, which was a very cool concept. The game is fun to play, running around killing things is not great fun, but enjoyable. But there were a few things that have kept me from going back and finishing this game off. It gives me a headache to play this game, the dialogue sequences hurt to watch. Literally it gives me a headache after 2-3 hours of gameplay. There just doesn't seem to be much to do besides the main story and a few side quests. Maybe I just haven't found that much, but an island with basically 2 large towns doesn't quite cut it for me. The story is enjoyable, but forgettable. You spend a lot of time running around talking to people, which is great considering the effect it has and how dull combat is. There are skills like smithing, but i really haven't found a great use for them other than filler skills. All in all this is an enjoyable game, but it would have been great if they fixed a few minor things.

Simply Amazing
This game is amazing. I loved it so much. I'm psyched to have heard that there is to be a Risen 2. When Risen first came out and there was that debate about whether Risen or ArcaniA: Gothic 4 would be the better Gothic predecessor, I was on the side of ArcaniA: Gothic 4... Until I played it. ArcaniA is NOTHING like any of the Gothic games before it. While still a decent game, it lacked what made Gothic fun and enjoyable. Now whereas Risen, on the other had, was almost EXACTLY like the Gothic series for PC. The gameplay, how people responded to you by the actions you made, and the certain faction you were required to join. ArcaniA had NONE of this. No one attacked you when you attacked them (unless they were meant to attack you) and no one responded to your actions. No one did anything when you stole something from inside their house, no one did anything when you raised your weapon at them, no one did anything. Risen had all of these things. After playing ArcaniA, I say that Risen, IS Gothic.

One of the best games of all time
This game is perfect, especially for people who love RPG games, anyone who played runescape, this game has a long story line which is great. the graphics aren't the best, but considering everything else it's pretty good. In the begining it's confusing but all you have to do is talk to eveyone and everything will make since, whatever price you see at the time you are thinking about purchasing this, trust me it's worth it.
