Spec Ops: The Line
I finally got this game after I heard a lot of good things online about it. I was blown away by the story of it and I found it to be a mash up of two of my favorite movies of Fight Club and Apocalypse Now!. It is a modern war third person shooter that has a really good cover system. My only complaint about that is that it uses two different buttons for getting out of cover and sometimes it will not slide you into cover directly and it can be frustrating at times but not too bad. I finished the game in three days but I just had a good weekend to just sit down and enjoy it. It has a good mix of cinematic moments and gameplay and finds a good mix. I would definitely pick this game up if I were you.
This game is by far the best 3rd person shooter I've ever played. I think Spec ops and Splinter cell blacklist are great tow totally different games but worth the money.
kick a** story line
the story line really sold me on this game, wasn't to fond of the lack of ammo through out, but over all not a bad game. would like to have a little more control over your unit as well.
"in war nobody wins"
spec cops the line is one of those types of games you look at the cover and you immediately pass on it. maybe its because this game was seriously marketed for the shooter fans, but this game is not just about the third person gunplay but the serious and mature story that lies underneath.
STORY: the story for spec ops the line starts off as cliche as possible, you have three young rugged American soldiers just itching to shoot something, sound familiar? you would be dead wrong. the setting for this unique gem of a game takes place in the heart of Dubai. the city was ravaged by a freak sandstorm that leveled the city and killed thousands. you play as captain walker the leader of a three man patrol comprised of CQC expert Adams and marksmen Lugo. after learning about the original team(the 33rd) sent into evacuate Dubai have gone missing Walker and his team are sent in to find the missing squad but soon you find out this is more than a simple search and rescue but a crash course through the mentality and the eventual breakdown of your group.
GAMEPLAY: if i had to choose a game that spec ops plays like i would choose gears of war. its your typical third person shooter with some minor changes. for example most of the guns have attachments like the SCAR has a grenade launcher attachment or the M14 which has a silencer can be used for a more stealthy approach. the cover system works fine you can strafe from cover to cover with ease and you can blind fire( which you might wanna do if you play on the suicide difficulty) commands can be given to Adams and Lugo, Adams can be called upon to use grenades and Lugo can be called to snipe any enemy they are very useful in a tight jam. The enemies are ruthless as they are stupid. sometimes you will be facing some tough opponents when another time you may be facing the other guys, who swarm on you like mindless idiots and try to hip fire three feet away from you. addition this game brings is the use of sand. sand can be used in a number of ways for example, you could be bogged down by a whole swarm of soldiers you could throw a grenade killing said soldiers and also blinding them with the sand from the explosion or soldiers could be firing on your position but behind them is a glass window just begging to be shot at because behind it lies a wall of sand.also snipers who are camped on top of a glass rooftop can be killed by shooting the roof itself. the gameplay is nothing new but its still fun.
GRAPHICS: some people may not dig the whole rough and gritty style of the games visuals, BUT THIS IS WAR MAN! and war aint pretty. and neither is this game. this game goes from your typical desert patrol to an apocalyptic wasteland that never quits. one minute you may see bodies burnt and charred to American soldiers hanging from street lamps its very disturbing. Dubai as a landscape for this game is beautiful and the sand element really adds to this games gritty style one minute you will be shooting at the enemy and a huge sandstorm will blow through reducing your vision and forcing you to walk through the storm itself. also the viewpoints when patrolling with your squad one minute you may think your on the ground but come to realize you are actually on top of a skyscraper, and the view is beautiful. walker and his group also change visually walker goes from your typical army soldier to a broken beat and scarred version of himself and i felt this really added to the game.
THE CHOICE SYSTEM: like i said before spec ops the line may look like your typical third person military shooter but the heart of this game really lies with walkers decisions. in some scenarios you may find yourself with a decision to make, and most of the time either Adams or Lugo may side with you but someone always gets hurt no matter the cost and it really shows. from the beginning to the game to the end walker Adams and Lugo go through some serious character development they go from itchy trigger soldiers to broken down men. who just want to leave except for walker who feels he needs to carry out his mission to the end. and its that tenacity that divides the group.
SOUND: the audio and sound in spec ops the line is that of your normal military shooter. your gun sounds great especially when suppressed. the voice acting was phenomenal and hats off to Nolan North as captain Walker for another great performance. Adams and Lugo also deliver great performances.
MY EXPERIENCE: im not gonna lie i bought this game out of sheer impulse i saw it for sale at best buy new for 20 bucks and bought it without even thinking about it. i got home played it and i feel asleep. the game itself didn't put me to sleep but i was already tired because i popped quite a bit of painkillers because of a certain game (Velvet Assassin). but i got up in the next morning and played it again. in the beginning its a little slow teaching ya the basics of the game, but it picks up very quick. the second i picked up a sniper rifle and shot some dude in the face with it my immediate reaction was a gaped mouth because i blew the dudes head off with the gun (BTW gore in a shooter always gets a plus in my book) from there on out i was loving it. i definitely felt the weight of my decisions and i felt as equally guilty as captain walker and the gun play was a great distraction from the story i was a little dissapointed when i found out the game was over so quickly (6 hours) but with the amazing story and the multiple endings i definitely see multiple playthroughs on this one .
THE VERDICT: 8/10 " An emotional roller coaster though the mentality of three soldiers and the lines that should not be crossed"
+an amazing thought provoking storyline
+choices in a third person military shooter, give the game more replayability
+Nolan north nails it as captain walker
-the graphics are quite dated
-the combat is stale
This is definetly the best TPS realistic shooter along with TC,S GRFS The guns in the game the campaign the multiplayer is great just pick it up if u like realistic games along with GR FS or if ure a GOW fan or crackdown pick this up.
Very Deep and Dark Story
Spec Ops The Line is a one of a kind. I had my eye on this game since the very first time it was announced, and despite the delays I still pursued this game and was not disappointed in what I found. The setting of this game is what really caught my attention, Dubai is one place where very few gamers have been in a game and was a fantastic opportunity for people to experience the golden sands, dust storms, rich agriculture, and much much more. It begins with your squad planning on rescuing civilians or evacuating them but as you progress through a few enemies your squad picks up a strange repeat of a voice message from a man named Colonel John Konrad. The main character referred to as "Walker" is then dead set on finding and rescuing the Colonel along with his men. Now to discuss the gameplay it is very smooth. I experienced little to no glitches or bugs through my 2 play throughs. Now if you are the type of person who is into gun variety in games Spec Ops has a huge variety varying from AK-47's, M4A1's, SCAR-H's, Micro 9mm, P-90's, Scout Tacticals,AK-74M's,and so many more. As you carry on through the story you start to see how the fighting and war in Dubai is taking a toll on your squad and how their actions towards one another is becoming more harsh and anger filled. That was one of the many things I enjoyed in the game because it shows the realism of what actually happens in war such as PTSD(Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). The graphics are inspiring and completely breath taking which makes the whole experience of the game even more worth while. The golden sands, the palm trees, the eye catching billboards, and even the rich turquoise art inside buildings. In Spec Ops The Line you have choices you can make in certain parts of the game, and believe me when I tell you, you cannot make both choices in each situation and the choices you do make do not affect your ending at all so you have nothing to worry about. The moments in this game where you have no choice at all are what really made me think. One area in the game you had to use a highly illegal and dangerous chemical known as " White Phosphorus" to eliminate what you think to be enemies. As you tread the sand with the enemies you just burned alive laying beneath your feet, you stumble upon refugees and the camera slows as you see a mother holding her child dead as the white phosphorus still burns away their flesh. That is when you think " God, what have I done? Why? Could I have stopped this?" That is just one of many moments in the game where you realize war is not perfect and that the consequences are inevitable, the dark side of war. The game is very achievement giving which I really liked just because it helped boost my gamer score, I have all the achievements except for 2 and those are the campaign difficulty achievements.Another great part of the game are the sandstorms that kick in randomly while you are in extremely heavy firefights which adds to the unpredictable events of war. The story in this game is one of a kind unique and has twists which makes you want to keep playing the game. The multiplayer is very well done with maps, weapons, and classes. The only thing it lacks is server size which was the only thing that bothered me due to the maps being big enough to have at least a few more players. Overall replay value is very high. Spec Ops The Line is a one of a kind third person shooter with a very dark story with an extreme amount of depth and thinking and is one game I will never forget.
Great game. Show a perspective that COD never will
Get this game for the single player game. It is about 13 hours long so its not a long game to play. But it will be one of those games that stay with you when its over. After playing game It made me reflect back to a question I often asked my self from when I was deployed numerous time to Iraq. "Are we really the good guys?" This game takes you through a path of events that show how gray the line of a "Good guy" can be. Game play feels like gears/Mass effect so it adequate to get through the story and this game is about the story. I recommend playing.
Dark. Full of twists. Brilliantly executed.
I purchased this game about a month ago and let me say it has been probably the best 30$ ive ever spent. This game is amazing. Some of the best writing I have seen in a game. This game goes beyond other games in my opinion in terms of story. If you are looking for a shooter, dont buy this game. If you are looking for a brilliantly written story that will keep you on edge and has a satisfying conclusion, buy it right now. Brilliant game. played the game twice. Spent about 12 hours combined both, but this game will stay with me much longer than that.
Spec ops the line is good for hardcore gamers because the awesome graphics great sounds and lovely story telling. The dialouge is great just to much cursing
Short campiagn and bad multiplayer
The campiagn is about five hours long and is too easy. The graphics on the campiagn look good however in the multiplayer it looks bad. I really did enjoy the story and the character development of how they change from the beginning to the end. I didn't enjoy the multiplayer because no one plays, it is4vs4, the maps are big for 4vs4, and it was boring. This game to me is third person shooter of homefront, since both games could have been better with more time developing them. Besides the good short story the other thing I liked is the achievements were easy.
